Davnog 21. prosinca 1914. u Hlebinama je rođen hrvatski slikar naivne umjetnosti – Ivan Generalić. Riječ je o najpoznatijem hrvatskom slikaru u svijetu. Umro je 27. prosinca 1992. u Koprivnici. Prvi put je izlagao sa skupinom Zemlja 1931. crteže i akvarele koje karakterizira socijalnokritički realizam blizak težnjama skupine. Poslije je slikao većinom na staklu uljem ili temperom narativne motive iz života na selu, podravske krajolike i drugo. Svjetski je postao poznat početkom pedesetih godina, nakon samostalne izložbe u Parizu. Osnovao je i financirao izgradnju Galerije Hlebine, u kojoj se danas nalazi aneks s oko dvadesetak njegovih kapitalnih djela koje je oporučno ostavio „hrvatskom narodu“. Velika mu je želja bila da se baš ta galerija nazove njegovim imenom, ali to se na žalost do sada nije ostvarilo, iako je njegovo ime u njegovo rodno mjesto godišnje privuklo na tisuće posjetitelja. Jednostavno mu ne žele ispuniti želju. U Koprivnici, kao najpoznatijem umjetniku iz ovoga kraja, jedva su mu svojedobno dali ulicu od 200-tinjak metara, ali u kojoj ne živi gotovo ni jedan stanovnik! I to nije bilo lako ostvariti. Morala se pisati peticija – dajte Generaliću ulicu! Prije svega zbog jala i zlobe, Generalić se odselio iz Hlebina i do smrti živio je u susjednom selu – Sigetcu, gdje je i sahranjen. S obzirom da su često govorili kako je u Hlebinama postojala „Hlebinska slikarska škola“, ovaj se umjetnik znao šaliti na račun toga, jer takva škola nikada u praksi nije postojala. Rekao bi: Da je bila škola, onda su trebale biti klupe, ploča i učitelj! A ja nikada nisam bio u takvoj školi- znao nam je kazati Generalić, poznat i kao veliki humanista. Na obiteljskoj kući u Sigetcu, na inicijativu moje malenkosti, postavljena je i spomen ploča u čast i slavu ovog slikarskog genija, ali na tome je na žalost sve i ostalo do današnjega dana.
No, kako godine idu i dalje su njegovi radovi iznimno cijenjeni, a opus mu je jedan od najizvornijih pojava u suvremenom hrvatskom i svjetskom slikarstvu.
Takav umjetnik, ne kaže se bez razloga, rađa se jednom u stotinu godina!
Na početku hrvatskog Domovinskoga rata iznimno se zalagao za stvaranje hrvatske države, a poglavito je pomagao hrvatske branitelje i stradalnike, a to se ne zaboravlja.
