Poslije dvaju neuspješnih mandata bivšega predsjednika Nikole Matičića iz Rijeke i članova Predsjedništva, tijekom kojih u osam godina mjerodavnim državnim tijelima nije podneseno ni jedno financijsko izvješće, a nekvalitetna suradnja s velikim dijelom od 38 ranjih ogranaka dosegnula vrhunac, u Zagrebu je u subotu, 8. lipnja, iza polugodišnje administrativne blokade djelovanja, održana izvanredna izborna skupština udruge ratnih veterana „Hrvatski domobran“. Od 58 verificiranih i pozvanih izaslanika, skupštini su se u Dom Specijalne policije odazvala 44 predstavnika općinskih i gradskih ogranaka, čije članstvo njeguje stoljeće i pol dugu i časnu tradiciju oružane sile hrvatskoga domobranstva i viteštva hrvatskoga vojnika. Poslije jednoglasnoga prihvaćanja Poslovnika o skupštinskom radu, uz prikupljenih nekoliko potpisa svojih sljedbenika, kandidaturu za čelno mjesto središnjice udruge podnio je na iznenađenje i negodovanje mnogih sudionika i Nikola Matičić. Tročlani inicijativni krug sazivanja izvanredne skupštinei radno predsjedništvo – Marko Krznarić (Osijek), Željko Tomić (Našice) i Josip Budimir (Zadar), te Željko Kulišić (Dubrovnik) – našao se pri tome pred nedoumicom. Osobito u trenutku, kad je Matičić bez imalo spremnosti na kritički osvrt o svom ranijem radu i posljedično stvorenoj krizi u udruzi najavio neutemeljene opaske na račun drugoga predsjedničkoga kandidata, Ivana Vuletića. Pošto se većina izaslanika, među njima i Marica Rumišek (Kutina), odlučila za javno glasovanje o kandidatima za predsjednika i osam regionalnih dopredsjednika središnjice „Hrvatskoga domobrana“, za Nikolu Matičića glasovala su četiri izaslanika, a za Ivana Vukelića njih 38.
Domobranstvo nije bilo zločinačka vojska
Zahvaljujući na povjerenju, Vukelić je rekao:- Očekuje nas velik i ogroman posao revitalizacije „Hrvatskoga domobrana“ koji simbolizira najveća vojnička i zarobljenička križnoputaška ratna stradanja naših pradjedova, djedova, stričeva i ujaka. Domobrana prve hrvatske države, NDH, ali i mnogih od nas koji smo u domobranskim postrojbama Hrvatske vojske sudjelovili u obrani naše slobode, neovisne Republike Hrvatske. Danas krećemo doslovno ispod nule, ali jednodušnom voljom i odlučnošću da stanje mijenjamo i do kraja promijenimo na bolje. Bez ijedne kune na računu, s dugovima, bez pečata, financijskih knjiga, registra stvarnoga broja članstva, pa i bez privremenoga tajnika Ivana Tokića iz Ogranka Zagreb, koji je danas zbog bolesti, navodno, izostao s ovoga skupa. Posebno dojmljiv bio je pozdravni govor 91-godišnjega utemeljitelja i počasnoga predsjednika „Hrvatskoga domobrana“, Vladimira Fučeka, koji je izrazio sreću i zadovoljstvo što je udruga ratnih veterana spašena od nestanka s domoljubne i političke pozornice. Ponikao u zagrebačkoj i remetskoj vrtlarsko-cvjećarskoj obitelji, gospodin Fuček je kao ministrant želio biti svećenik, ali se između trojice braće na kraju odlučio za vojnički poziv. Poslan je vojno školovanje u Srijemskoj Kamenici, dragovoljno je pristupio vojsci s nepunih 15 godina. U proljeće je 1945. bio kadet Domobranske akademije, a sa 17 godina prošao je pakao Bleiburga i brutalnog partizanskoga zarobljavanja.
